Here is the cartoon opened as an RGB image in Photoshop.
The checkerboard pattern that you see is the background and indicates transparent areas.

This image is a single layer right now, but our next step is to create a new layer in your cartoon that you will color.
Open the layers palette and select 'duplicate layer' from the options. Name the new layer "paint."
